An IRB is an “Institutional Review Board” or “Research Ethics Board”, a committee designed to review clinical studies. KAMC IRB complies with the International Conference on Harmonization-Good Clinical Practice guidelines, and the National Committee of BioMedical Ethics guidelines.

According to ICH-GCP, the IRB is a committee of at least five members representing different professions and genders. Members of the IRB protect the privacy and other rights of research participants.

They review and monitor the studies, and continually review updates on safety information, the consent process, amendment request, protocol deviation, and the number of participants enrolled in the study as well as the number of participants who withdrew.

The IRB has the authority to approve, require modification or disapprove any research activities involving human subjects or their data. KAMC IRB make their decision independent

from the research administration and the hospital administration. The IRB follow approved written standard operating procedures. The committee reports directly to Chief Executive Officer of KAMC and it works under direct supervision of the National Bioethics Committee. The decision depends on the IRB’s judgment of the balance between the risks to study participants in relation to the potential benefits (if any).
